How we may use AI

We may use generative AI to help with work such as:

• preparing outlines, briefs, headlines, search descriptions, keywords, and other pre-publication materials;
• checking drafts for grammar, spelling, style, clarity, and consistency between English and Spanish versions;
• creating summaries, translations, and other adaptations of material for different formats or platforms;
• organizing, comparing, or summarizing background material, public records, data, and source documents for evaluation by an editor;
• finding relevant material in our own archives and helping us organize previously published coverage;
• creating original editorial illustrations or assisting with visual concepts; and
• supporting new uses that are consistent with this policy and include appropriate human review, safeguards, and transparency.

Human review and editorial standards

AI does not publish to U Visa Status on its own. Articles, guides, translations, and other editorial material are reviewed before publication. Editors remain responsible for what appears on the site.

We evaluate factual claims against reliable sources and link to original documents when practical. We do not treat an AI response as evidence or cite it as the authority for a factual claim. We do not knowingly use AI to invent quotations, interviews, events, sources, or first-person reporting.

AI-assisted illustrations are editorial artwork, not photographs or documentary evidence. We use captions or labels when additional context is needed to prevent a visual from being mistaken for a record of an actual event.

The estimator and individual cases

The U Visa Wait Estimator does not use generative AI to decide its results. Its estimates come from published aggregate data and documented calculation rules. It does not access USCIS case files, determine eligibility, predict an official decision, or provide legal advice.

We do not ask generative AI to make decisions about an individual immigration case. We also do not intentionally submit private applicant records, immigration documents, case numbers, or private messages from our audience to generative-AI systems.

Important limitations

Nothing on U Visa Status is legal advice. Our news, guides, estimates, summaries, and all other information are provided for general educational and informational purposes. They do not create an attorney-client relationship and should not be treated as advice about what to do in an individual case. Immigration cases depend on facts and law specific to each person. Verify important information with official sources and hire a qualified immigration attorney for advice about your case.

Be careful when discussing your case online. Comments, forums, social media groups, and other public spaces may be copied or shared beyond your control. Do not publicly post your A-Number, USCIS receipt number, date of birth, home address, phone number, email address, passport information, immigration documents, notices, or detailed facts that could identify you or another person. Share sensitive case information only through a secure channel with a qualified professional you trust.

Disclosure and emerging uses

When AI plays a meaningful role in content or an experience and that fact would help our audience understand what they are seeing, we will provide an appropriate disclosure. If we introduce an interactive AI feature that produces material without review before it is shown, we will clearly identify the feature and explain that limitation.

AI tools and newsroom practices continue to change. We may update this policy as our uses evolve, while continuing to apply human oversight, source verification, privacy safeguards, and clear accountability.
